Formality in presenting
By Simon Raybould of Curved Vision
I'm often asked about what to wear when making a presentation or doing some public speaking. There are no rules but there is a pretty clear guideline. You should wear something one level - and only one level - of formality up from your audience. If they're in jeans and tee-shirts you should be in an open necked shirt. If they're in shirts, you should be in a tie... The aim is to do two things. Firstly, you want to establish your credibility and authority as the expert, so you want to be more formal than them. Secondly, however, you don't want to distance yourself or alienate yourself from your audience by looking to much different from them. It's a balancing act, basically! :) My advice if you're not sure what to expect is the obvious one, by the way. Turn up for your presentation looking relatively formal as it's easier to take make yourself informal by, for example, taking a tie off, than it is to formalise yourself by, for example putting on a tie (especially if you didn't bring one with you!)
