Accept, Build, Return
By Simon Raybould of Curved Vision
Accept, Build, Return is a mantra of improvisation specialists in theatre. It's talking about the 'flow of control' or the 'flow of initiative'. The basic idea is that as an improviser you accept what someone says to you, build on it by providing more information and then pass the control back to the other person for them to accept what you've just built. The classic example is for me to ask you what's on your shoulder. If you say "Nothing?" you've not accepted anything from me and the improvisation is going to struggle to go anywhere. On the other hand if you accept that there is something on your shoulder and you scream "What is it? It looks poisonous!!" then you've accepted and built - if you then ask me to get it off, you've returned the control to me. It's a great way of dealing with the unscripted parts of your presentation - don't take that too literally, presentations should never be literally "scripted"… but it's got wider uses too, in areas such as if you're door-stepped by a journalist or taken by surprise by a question you hadn't anticipated. Accept what they say... build on it by (for example) generalising to the principle (if they've challenged you about a specific) and then return the initiative to them by saying something like "I'm sure you'll agree." |
